Refresh your home for Fall – Preventative Home Maintenance checklist

With cooler temperatures and a change of season, now is the perfect time to give the front of your home a refreshing change; while also addressing the some of the practical home maintenance items that will protect the outside surfaces of your home, which are exposed to extreme elements throughout the year.

Exterior painting or staining is one of the most important maintenance projects to protect your investment. It makes your home more appealing, but the benefits go way beyond esthetics. The major reason is that by protecting the exterior of your home, you avoid costly repairs down the line & you also protect the interior by avoiding extensive damaging from leaks that result from the deterioration of the exterior of your home. The accent color on your doors and shutters give your home an immediate facelift. Changing the hardware and updating exterior light fixtures and adding a seasonal wreath will give the entrance of your home a warm and welcoming appearance.

Trim, siding, roofing, gutters, windows, doors and shutters should be checked yearly for damage. With a careful inspection of the caulking at the joints to insure that your home is not only water tight and free from pests; but also energy efficient. The roof is the part of the house that is the most exposed to the elements. It should be clear of debris, which tends to hold water. Shingles that are damaged should be replaced. If there are any hanging branches, keep them trimmed back. Have any algae or moss treated. Also be sure to check the flashing at the base of the vent pipes for cracks or damage. The gutters should be cleaned Spring and Fall. Down spouts should be clear of debris.

Deck repair and maintenance is essential for safety reasons. It is recommended that you have your deck checked yearly for loose boards or railings and protruding nails. Also the surface needs to be thoroughly power washed and stained or sealed once a year.
This will prevent the deck deteriorating and help prevent splinters. It will also keep it safe from becoming slick from algae or leaves.

We turn our clocks back on November 1st , a good time to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

By getting started now you will be able to enjoy in the mild autumn days and be ready for the inclement weather ahead.

Is there enough life left in your roof to protect your home?

Roof damage is usually gradual. Your roof has weathered extreme heat from the sun, storms with strong winds, heavy rain, snow & ice; all of which can deteriorate your roof over time.

Any damage or signs of wear call for immediate action to keep water from seeping under the shingles and rotting the wood sheathing beneath. Ignoring a problem—even what appears to be a small one—will accelerate the need to replace your roof and can add hundreds of dollars to the cost the roof project.

For peace of mind, have your roof inspected and avoid costly repairs to the rest of your home.
